Biography & Metadata

Chicago-born, Lagos-raised artist & producer UCHE makes Brutalist RnB: emotionally charged music where sparse arrangements carry immense weight. Intimate vocals, architectural production & cinematic tension define a sound built around contrast - between tenderness and abrasion, negative space & overwhelming feeling. BILLBOARD AFRICA calls him an “R&B rule breaker” who “continues to carve out one of the most compelling lanes in contemporary African-diasporic music.” Born William Uchenna Akogu, UCHE spent formative years in Yaba and Surulere on Lagos’s Mainland. Moving from America to Nigeria meant learning to navigate different expectations, rhythms & ways of seeing the world. That continual adaptation became part of his creative language, shaping an artist whose music moves across African, American & diasporic traditions. UCHE brings that perspective into worlds that feel expansive yet close enough to touch. As Pigeons & Planes observed, “Uche’s sound and vision is influenced by constant adaptation and continual evolution.” His self-produced, double-disc project, ‘wake me up when it’s time to sleep’, turns that evolving language toward intimacy, alienation & the search for agency in a world where everything feels commodified. Across the project, personal tensions open onto larger questions: what we accept, what we withdraw from, and how we find connection when the structures around us no longer feel worthy of our faith.
