Biography & Metadata
Jean-Robert Dray is a French singer-songwriter, composer, keyboardist and self-taught poet driven by resilience, independence and artistic freedom. Raised within France’s public care system, he grew up between foster homes and children’s institutions. Music, writing and sport became both structure and refuge. Entirely self-taught and gifted with absolute pitch, he began on the melodica, performing classical works and film themes at an early age. At fifteen, playing entirely by ear, he performed Bach’s Toccata in D minor on major church organs in Paris and beyond. He later turned to piano, Yamaha Electone, synthesizers and organ, developing a true “one-man orchestra” approach that combines performance, orchestration, improvisation and voice. His musical language moves freely between classical, jazz, pop, poetic rap, symphonic textures and musical theatre — always marked by a distinctive and instinctive signature. In 1984, selected among thousands of candidates, he performed at Théâtre Mogador in Paris as one of eight finalists in the Yamaha Electone National Competition. He is the author of three musicals, including Jeanne (Jeanne de Sainte-Thérèse), performed in Paris, Orléans and Lyon. He is also co-founder of the duos Andante (with Valérie Roy) and Such-Wind (with Philippe Loron), a pop-folk project inspired by the spirit of The Beatles. Choosing artistic integrity over commercial trends, Jean-Robert Dray continues to create sincere, powerful and uncompromising work.
