Biography & Metadata

As a child James Heather's Grandad taught him composition & how to manipulate the tuning of piano strings. Also inspired by Ludwig van Beethoven, Claude Debussy & his neighbour’s Acid House pirate radio show, the piano became a passion. After a near death experience & period in a coma, he had an energy to step out as an artist. His art takes as much from electronic music in sensibility & post-rock in its dynamics as it does its classical & jazz grounding. In 2022 Heather released his 2nd LP Invisible Forces, exploring forces around us to help deepen understanding of self & connection to the world. The tracks (alongside Modulations: EP2) were this time honed on the road, playing shows like Green Man, Glastonbury, Berlin Planetarium & more. His approach, dubbed ‘Pulse Music’, finds him playing freely, with no notation but instead instinct leading. In 2021 he released 'And She Came Home - Strings Version' for @0 EP3 alongside Ryuichi Sakamoto. Heather first released via Ahead Of Our Time in 2017, Ninja Tune founders Coldcut's label with Modulations: EP1, followed by Stories From Far Away On Piano. He has been reworked by Ishmael Ensemble, Mary Lattimore, Mogwai, VOCES8, KMRU & Sarah Davachi for his Reworks albums. Supporters include Cillian Murphy, Nils Frahm, Hannah Peel, Flying Lotus’s Brainfeeder label, Dawn Richard & Roger Robinson (King Midas Sound). As well as The Cinematic Orchestra & Bill Fay, who both asked Heather to rework him.
