Biography & Metadata

The contemplative, psychedelic synth pop project of songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Collin Desha, Low Hum balances clubby beats, textured noise, and billowy atmospheres. Low Hum's sound gradually expanded into cinematic territory across albums including full-length debut Room to Breathe (2019), the more whimsical Nonfiction (2021), and Terra Incognita (2024), which was punctuated with symphonic noise pop. Desha played guitar and synths for Los Angeles indie rock group Vanaprasta before most of the band, including Desha, rebooted as Sun Drug and released an eponymous EP in 2015. Desha began issuing synth-based music under his solo handle in 2016 for Hit City USA, and later co-produced Low Hum's debut EP with drummer/engineer Jules de Gasperis. Indebted to the steady dance grooves and tone of the more brooding side of '80s post-punk, Low Hum's self-titled debut EP was released by Chain Letter Collective in early 2018. It was followed by the like-minded Room to Breathe, the project's full-length debut, on Last Gang Records in mid-2019. The album was produced by Desha and mixed by de Gasperis. Produced by Desha with Jon Joseph (Mini Trees, Bayonne), Low Hum's second album, October 2021's Nonfiction, found Desha gradually adopting a more cinematic sound reminiscent of Tame Impala. It was an approach that he further amplified on May 2024's self-produced Terra Incognita, Low Hum's third full-length outing for Last Gang. The industrial-edged non-album single "Romantic Rights" followed on the label that July. ~ Marcy Donelson, Rovi
