Biography & Metadata
Peter, Paul and Mary didn't just sing folk music—they lived it. Emerging from New York’s Greenwich Village in the early 1960s, Peter Yarrow, Noel “Paul” Stookey, and Mary Travers reclaimed folk music as a potent social, cultural, and political force. With their impeccably crafted harmonies and unmitigated passion, they turned traditional ballads and topical songs into anthems for a generation looking for change. The Trio stood on the front lines of history. They sang at the historic 1963 March on Washington right before Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech, joined the Selma to Montgomery march, and anchored countless anti-Vietnam War rallies. Over a legendary 50-year career, their musical activism championed human rights, environmental justice, and workers' rights. As one of Warner Bros. Records' foundational artists, the group earned five Grammy Awards, scored 13 Top 40 hits (including six in the Top 10), and amassed eight gold and five platinum albums. In 2006, the Songwriters Hall of Fame honored PPM with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Their timeless canon bridges generations, featuring classics like "500 Miles," "Blowin' In the Wind," "If I Had a Hammer," "Leaving on a Jet Plane," "The Great Mandala," "El Salvador," "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," and the legendary "Puff The Magic Dragon." Decades later, Peter, Paul and Mary's music remains an open invitation to unite, overcome differences, and build a more just world together.
