Biography & Metadata

Born in Vienna, Gottlieb Wallisch gave his first concert at seven and debuted in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein at twelve. His teachers included Heinz Medjimorec, Pascal Devoyon and Oleg Maisenberg. A concert with Sinfonia Varsovia under Yehudi Menuhin launched his international career: at seventeen, he performed Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ Concerto. Since then, Wallisch has appeared in major halls such as Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Cologne Philharmonie, Tonhalle Zurich, NCPA Beijing, and at festivals including Lucerne, Salzburg, Ruhr Piano Festival and Beethovenfest Bonn. He has worked with conductors like Sinopoli, Marriner, Petrenko, Langrée and Lawrence Foster. Wallisch has played with orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, BBC Symphony Wales and Festival Strings Lucerne. He has recorded for LINN, Deutsche Grammophon and Alpha Classics; in 2012, he became a “Steinway Artist”. Recently, Wallisch has focused on historic interpretation, collaborating with Christopher Hogwood, Camerata Salzburg and Musica Angelica. His 2020 Beethoven Piano Concertos set, on period instruments, was nominated for the Opus Klassik 2021. Since 2016 he has been professor for piano at UdK Berlin, previously at HEM Genève, Franz Liszt Academy (guest), and giving master-classes worldwide, including Mozarteum Salzburg, Illinois, Denver, Nagoya, St. Petersburg and Copenhagen.
