Biography & Metadata
Thomas Morgan is an American jazz bassist, arranger, and composer. His many recording and performing credits reflect an immense musical range. He's worked with bandleaders including Steve Coleman, Bill Frisell, Paul Motian, Jakob Bro, and Masabumi Kikuchi, among others. He made his recording debut with the VNMG quartet on 2000's Short Stories (People, Places, Times) followed by 2002's Down Homeless. In 2006 he joined the Dan Weiss Trio for Now Yes When, and Tyshawn Sorey on 2007's That Not and 2009's Koan. He played with Motian for On Broadway, Vol. 5 and 2011's The Windmills of Your Mind. In 2013 Morgan appeared on ECM dates led alternately by Giovanni Guidi, Craig Taborn, and Tomasz Stanko. He joined guitarist Jakob Bro's touring and recording bands in 2014. In 2017, Morgan and Frisell issued the duo set Small Town, followed by 2019's Epistrophy. In 2025, Morgan issued his leader debut, Around You Is a Forest. A year later he teamed with Thomas Strønen and Ayumi Tanaka on Windflower. Morgan was born in Hayward, California and began studying cello at age seven. He studied the bass in high school and attended the Manhattan School of Music, where he received a bachelor's degree. While in college he immersed himself in New York City's jazz scene. He began his recording career in the early 2000s with a pair of albums in a quartet with Will Vinson, Peter Gabis, and Steve Newcomb, billed as VNMG. That band gigged in and around the city as much as possible, but Morgan was also busy working with other players, establishing himself on the scene with his clean, woody tone, fluid improvisational ability, and canny timekeeping skills; he proved adaptable to many settings and bandleaders. He performed in Binney's group on dates like 2005's Bastion of Sanity (with Jacob Sacks, Dan Weiss, and Chris Potter) and 2006's Cities and Desire (with Mark Turner, Craig Taborn, and Weiss, all of whom he would continue to work with in various settings). In 2007, he made his first recording with Tyshawn Sorey (That/Not) and in 2008 joined the Samuel Blaser Quartet -- marking the beginning of longstanding working relationships with both men. Morgan also worked as a member of Abercrombie's quartet in 2008, making his ECM debut as a sideman on Wait 'til You See Her. He appeared on Jen Shyu's Jade Tongue in 2009. He played on 12 recordings in 2010 by bandleaders as diverse as Steve Coleman, Weiss, the Sylvie Courvoisier-Mark Feldman Quartet, and Scott DuBois. The following year proved even more fateful: Not only did he work in Blaser's and Courvoisier & Feldman's groups, he made his debut with the Jim Black Trio (in which he continues to play). In 2012 he joined pianist Kikuchi's trio on Sunrise. He played in Paul Motian's trio with Bill Frisell on The Windmills of Your Mind, the final album issued by the drummer. Over the next two years, Morgan deepened his relationship with ECM by playing on important recordings by Stanko (the seminal Wislawa), and in trios for Kikuchi, Taborn, and pianist Giovanni Guidi. Also in 2014, the bassist returned to familiar terrain with Courvoisier-Feldman on Birdies for Lulu. In 2015 it was back to Blaser's quartet for Spring Rain (Whirlwind Recordings) and a collaborative date with Kikuchi, Ben Street, and Kresten Osgood. The following year he appeared on drummer/composer Jim Black's The Constant. Morgan and Frisell recorded 2017's live duo album Small Town for ECM at New York's Village Vanguard. Both men played on Ron Miles' milestone I Am a Man. In 2018, Morgan appeared on Henry Threadgill's 14 or 15 Kestra: Agg – Dirt... And More Dirt. Morgan and Frisell re-paired for another series of shows at the Vanguard recorded for 2019's Epistrophy, wherein they interpreted several jazz and pop standards, movie themes, and compositions from Paul Motian's songbook. During the global pandemic in 2020, Morgan appeared on five recordings, among them Frisell's Valentine, Miles' Rainbow Sign, and Black's Reckon. The following year he cut his second record with Jade Tongue on Jen Shyu's Zero Grasses: Ritual for the Losses on Pi, and saxophonist Chet Doxas' You Can't Take It with You on Whirlwind Recordings. The following year he appeared on Charles Lloyd's globally acclaimed Trios: Chapel and Trio of Trios with Frisell. Morgan also joined Bro and Joe Lovano on Once Around the Room: A Tribute to Paul Motian, and Zoh Amba's O, Sun. In 2024, Morgan played on eight recordings. Among them were Ethan Iverson's Technically Acceptable, Frisell's Orchestras, and Bro's Music for Black Pigeons. In addition, he played on A New Day with Guidi, James Brandon Lewis, and João Lobo. In 2025, Morgan released his leader debut after a quarter-century as a professional. Titled Around You Is a Forest, it appeared on Bro's Loveland Records label and comprised nine compositions. It offered eight duets with longtime collaborators including Threadgill, Taborn, Weiss, and Frisell, as well as Immanuel Wilkins, Gerald Cleaver, Ambrose Akinmusire, and poet Gary Snyder. In August the following year, Morgan, Japanese pianist Ayumi Tanaka, and Norwegian drummer Thomas Strønen released Windflower on ECM. It showcased the trio blending varied musical sensibilities in woven-together songs -- offered at times with loosely composed structures -- influenced by chamber music and jazz, in wholly organic, intimate compositions. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
