Christian Cherry writes openly about wanting recognition and escape while creating from a town hundreds of miles from the industry centres he imagines might supply them. Yet the fantasy already has tangible weight: Spotify editorial support across the UK and Europe, songwriting credits with Greek pop stars, and viral moments on social media. For an independent British-Cypriot artist emerging from Cyprus, these are substantial early footholds. That hunger animates his forthcoming project which draws on the abrasion, wounded melodicism and black humour of ’90s indie and alternative rock. Distorted guitars collide with blown-out electronics and an unabashed pop instinct, turning frustration, desire and self-disgust into songs that want to be sung back. The world around them is sun-bleached and slightly apocalyptic: Mediterranean heat colliding with the psychic debris of growing up online. Its songs move through sex, screens, self-invention and romantic fixation, turning grunge’s familiar discomfort with being seen inside out into the desperation of wanting to be noticed. Fame, God and obsession keep resurfacing as different answers to the same fear: that an ordinary life might swallow him before anybody notices he was here.
