Often witty and always colourful, pulsing with earthy rhythms, Bruce's music has a directness rarely heard in contemporary music, but also contains an emotional core of striking intimacy and sensitivity. Bruce's music has been recognised and performed by leading performers and institutions around the world, from the BBC Proms, who premiered his 2018 piece Sidechaining, to Carnegie Hall, who commissioned David Bruce: Gumboots – Johannes Brahms: Clarinet Quintet and three other pieces; from the Royal Opera House and Glyndebourne who commissioned the operas The Firework-Maker's Daughter and Nothing, to The Silk Road Ensemble, for whom he wrote Cut The Rug ( Cut The Rug: Drag The Goat Cut The Rug: Bury The Hatchet Cut The Rug: Move The Earth Cut The Rug: Wake The Dead ) . In 2013-14 David was Associate Composer with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, for whom he wrote three pieces : Night Parade for the orchestra's Carnegie Hall debut in October 2013; the Violin Concerto Fragile Light for Gil Shaham; and Cymbeline featuring mandolinist Avi Avital. As well as composing, David also runs a very popular YouTube channel, "David Bruce Composer" where he talks about music and composing from his own unique perspective.
