Biography & Metadata

Formed in Paris in 1986 by Manu Chao, his brother Tonio, and cousin Santiago, Mano Negra fused rock, rap, flamenco, and rai into a high-energy style they called "Patchanka." They debuted in 1988 with the LP Patchanka, scoring an indie hit with "Mala Vida." This breakthrough earned them a contract with Virgin Records, which released their acclaimed follow-up Puta's Fever in 1989, making them France's top alternative act. They expanded globally with King of Bongo (1991) and toured South America extensively by ship and train. Latin influences heavily shaped their final album, Casa Babylon (1994). The band split shortly after, and Chao launched a successful solo career in 1998.
