Biography & Metadata

Grammy-nominated vocalist, songwriter, and producer Sofía Rei creates music where ancestral memory meets fearless experimentation. Rooted in Latin American traditions yet untethered by genre, her work is driven by a singular voice capable of intimate fragility and electrifying power. Rei’s sound is ancient and futuristic, poetic and visceral, shaped as much by instinct as by craft. Born and raised in Buenos Aires and now based in New York City, Rei has followed a fluid artistic path. Her musical language draws from South American folklore, classical training, punk, jazz, experimental music, and electronic textures, woven into a deeply personal sonic universe. Praised by The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and DownBeat for her vocal beauty and versatility, her voice moves freely across styles while remaining unmistakably her own. Rei’s journey has taken her from Buenos Aires’ underground scenes to renowned stages and festivals in more than 35 countries. Her two NPR Tiny Desk performances were hailed by The New York Times as “wildly eclectic” and “a nearly hallucinatory international mix.” Rei's artistic range and curiosity are reflected in collaborations with John Zorn, Bobby McFerrin, Maria Schneider, Mark Ribot, Susana Baca, Mike Patton and Pedrito Martinez. Sofía is also a Professor at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute, where she teaches courses on Latin music and experimental vocal performance.
