Biography & Metadata

Marcas Mac an Tuairneir was shortlisted for Gaelic Singer of the Year at the Trads in 2022. He is a former member of Trosg, having performed at Celtic Connections, the Belladrum Festival, and across Scotland. In 2016 and 2021, he was an An Comunn Gàidhealach Gold Medal Finalist. He was a Traditional Gold Medalist in 2019. His lyrics has been sung by Mary Ann Kennedy, Ainsley Hammill, Malina MacDonald, Rachel Walker and Gillie MacKenzie, among others. Marcas frequently writes songs in partnership with women musicians, notably Mary Ann Kennedy - together, they composed 'Ainneamhag' for Inverness Gaelic Choir, which won second place in the Lovat and Tullibardine Awards of 2016 and 'Grioglachan', in memory of the late Maggie 'Hearach' MacDonald of Cliar. The latter featured on Kennedy's LP 'An Dàn'. Marcas also has a successful songwriting partnership with Rachel Walker, with whom he wrote 'Là Luain', 'Tìr is Sàl', 'Beannachd' and 'Òran na Cille' as well as songs for 'Despite The Wind and Rain' He has also written with Marit Falt, Josie Duncan, Ceitidh Campbell, Ainsley Hamill, and Julie MacFadyen. He was a founding member of the LGBT music collective Bogha-frois. His debut album, Speactram, including self-penned songs and others written with Nick Turner, Adam Holmes, Gillie Mackenzie, Pàdruig Morrison and Walker was released to critical acclaim by Watercolour Music in July, 2022. Mac an Tuairneir the Gaelic Tutor of the Lothian Gaelic Choir, with whom he sings tenor.
