Roni Eytan

Roni Eytan picked up the harmonica as a teenager in Jerusalem, drawn to how close it can come to the human voice, and found his way into jazz through records of trumpet, saxophone and piano players. Now based in New York, he began touring with Danilo Pérez at 23, and has since played with Kris Davis, John Patitucci, Brian Blade, Gilad Hekselman and Shai Maestro. He was the first harmonica player chosen for the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, where he was mentored by Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. With Brendan Power, he developed a microtonal harmonica built to speak the language of Middle Eastern maqam. His debut album, Melody People, produced by Shai Maestro, grew out of the melodies he sang as a child with his grandfather, a natural storyteller.
