“When the Soul Aches” is a very personal song for me. It grew out of one of the conversations Evgen and I had after he was discharged from the hospital. During that time, we often spoke about life, feelings, time and what happens inside a person when familiar words can no longer explain anything. We did not make grand speeches. We were simply two friends sitting together and talking. One evening, I tried to put what I was feeling into words. "Что делать мне, когда болит душа? Когда внутри всё сжалось до простой монеты..." A few lines gradually became a poem, and the poem eventually led me to this song. The complete Russian text remains a separate work. Perhaps I will publish it one day. Not everything we spoke about that evening found its way into the lyrics. Some parts of that conversation belong only to us. But I kept its honesty, its silences and the feelings that remained after the words were over.
