Biography & Metadata
Dušan Bogdanović is a guitarist, composer, and educator whose work is characterized by a constant dialogue between diverse musical traditions. Trained in the classical repertoire, he has gradually developed a compositional style that incorporates elements drawn from jazz, the music of the Balkans, and a variety of folk traditions. His extensive catalogue includes works for solo guitar, chamber ensembles, orchestra, and vocal groups, as well as a substantial body of theoretical writings. Among notable recordings of his music is Music Gardens of the World (2026), a project inspired by melodies and dances from different cultures, reflecting his enduring interest in the exchange of musical traditions. Born in Belgrade in 1955, Bogdanović studied guitar, composition, and orchestration at the Geneva Conservatory. Early in his career, he received the only First Prize awarded at the Geneva International Competition in 1975, before making his Carnegie Hall debut in New York in 1977. These distinctions paved the way for an international career as a soloist, which he has pursued alongside his work as a composer. Throughout his career, he has performed across Europe, North America, and Asia, appearing both in recital and in a wide range of chamber music projects. His musical language is shaped by a strong interest in improvisation, complex rhythms, and the meeting of different traditions. This approach is evident in Yano Mori (1999), an anthology of works where classical influences, the folk music of Southeastern Europe, and elements of jazz converge. Bogdanović's work extends well beyond performance. He has composed numerous works commissioned for guitarists and ensembles around the world, including concertos, dance scores, and chamber pieces. His compositions are regularly published and performed by musicians specializing in contemporary guitar repertoire. His achievements as a composer are further highlighted by Codex: Complete Works for 4 Guitars (2010), an album devoted to his complete works for guitar quartet. Alongside his creative activities, he has pursued an extensive teaching career at several institutions, including the Belgrade Academy, the San Francisco Conservatory, and the Geneva University of Music. He is also the author of books on instrumental technique and counterpoint, reflecting his longstanding interest in the relationship between musical practice and theory. Released in 2019, Balkanisms is another recording of his music, performed by Mak Grgić that illustrates his engagement with the musical traditions of his native region, reinterpreted through a contemporary musical language that remains one of the defining features of his artistic career. ~ Islem Meghiref, Rovi
