Neo Sū

Ethereal hissing and whirring of machines are as much a part of the Neo Sū’s signature as are the various permutations of electric and acoustic guitar, bass, synths, hand pan, glockenspiel, trumpet and melodica, all of which Neo deploys to map a shape-shifting sonic terrain that summons everything from Gold Panda and Aphex Twin to Maher Shalal Hash Baz and The Cocteau Twins. Neo’s music is an off-grid testament to the vivid possibilities of intermediate technology, with Neo favouring a literal hands-on approach in his tactile deployment of micro-cassettes and miscellaneous analogue tape recorders – at times, physically sculpting the sound by, for example, delicately pressing the forwards button of an antediluvian tape machine to induce tremulous, otherworldly effects. “I was drawn to the imperfections of tape”, he affirms, “I embrace glitches and the audible sound of things being turned on and off”.
