Biography & Metadata

Family Tapes is an independent recording project based in Brooklyn, NYC, USA. Created by NYC producer and multi-instrumentalist Sun Cut Flat in 2020 as a side-project, FT has highlighted an eclectic mix of contributing artists. The name comes from the nostalgic feeling of opening a box of long-lost VHS cassettes, conjuring static filled memories of loved ones, family, and friends. Family Tapes has explored the diverse sonic spaces of bedroom indiepop, 60's soul, and most recently, 90's inspired golden-era boom bap/ conscious rap. Collaborating artists on this musical journey have included Atlanta's stephenxjones , Katherine Ocampo of Lulada Club (band leader of NYC's first all-female salsa band), Florida based soul-singer Christiana Ramirez, NYC artists Mistah Levy, Uncle Willy Son, and Deli The Indelible, German musician Phillip Dornbuschs Projektor, and CT producer eastend.zulu. Also featured prominently has been SCF's lyrical alter-ego, Derek Cedar. Following up the cherished three-vol. series Hip Hop Sovereignty, Family Tapes released the 15-track album Nico in early 2026. The album is anchored by the surprising success of Groundskeeper To The Shrine , an ode to the golden era of hip hop teeming with fresh creativity throughout. In 2026, the project hit the stage for the first time with three shows in Brooklyn, NYC. New collaborations with German producer Will B. Heard including My Crates have taken FT to new heights, with a new LP on deck. http://famtapes.com
