Biography & Metadata

Prince George’s County, Maryland-born MC, producer, artist, and educator, Substantial, debuted in 2000 collaborating with the late Japanese producer, Nujabes known for his work on Samurai Champloo. Legendary rapper/activist, Chuck D of Public Enemy referred to Substantial as “One of the great MCs of our time.” His soulful and introspective brand of rap has received critical acclaim from The Source, HipHopDX, Ebony.com, and Okayplayer.com. His videos have appeared on MTV, VH1, and BET. Substantial has performed in nearly 20 countries and has collaborated with DJ Kool Herc, Oddisee, Funky DL, and more. In 2021, Substantial was featured on an original song for PUBG Mobile’s short film The Growth and again later in the year on the song, Evolve (PUBG Mobile and Tesla Collaboration Theme Song). In 2020, Substantial featured on The Real Folk Blues COVID-19 relief cover with Yoko Kanno, the SEATBELTS, Mason Lieberman, Mega Ran, and 40 other artists for an official Cowboy Bebop charity track with FUNIMATION and Sunrise which reached #6 on Billboard for "World Digital Sales". Substantial is 1/2 of the group Bop Alloy with Seattle-raised/Tokyo-based producer Marcus D. The duo just released their critically acclaimed third LP, Masters of the Artistry, this Spring, which was successfully backed on Kickstarter, independently raising over $32,000 in 30 days. It features appearances by Blu, One Be Lo, Uyama Hiroto, Stephanie Gayle, Javier Starks and Joe.D.
