Biography & Metadata
Sarel was born in Jerusalem to an Afghan-origin father and a U.S.-origin mother. He is a Kanun master, composer, and arranger. His musical influences come from both Eastern tradition and Western culture. His first album, produced in collaboration with producer Ron Bakal, combines diverse inspirations - from the East and the West, from the old and the new, and from the conservative to the liberal view. The album reveals his personality's complex and contradictory layers and brings aromas of jazz, Turkish and Arabic music, progressive rock, and funk. As an instrumentalist, Sarel deals with philosophical questions about humanity, religion, God, society, and identity. These questions underlie his works and illuminate his spiritual and musical world. In his current works, Sarel deals with questions of choice, faith, and identity. Throughout his career, Sarel played with leading artists such as Zohar Fresco, Dudu Tassa, etc, and played in jazz and world music festivals worldwide. Sarel arranged for bands and orchestras. Among the musicians participating in the project: Mayo Shviro, Ofer Mizrahi, Shlomi Cohen.
