Biography & Metadata

RENATA PRÔA is an artist-scientist redefining the space between music and science. After years living under a double identity — half of the time writing mathematical equations to understand how the brain works, and the other half working as a professional opera singer — she found a purpose in writing songs that explore the emotional lives of scientific ideas and challenge the divide between objectivity and subjectivity. Based in New York City, she creates cosmic art-pop shaped by the classical and experimental worlds she comes from. Her sound pairs close, vulnerable vocals with atmospheric electronic production, layered harmonies and an often cinematic sense of space, moving between intimacy and theatricality, melodic simplicity and sonic complexity. Rather than translating science into music, she uses the two as different languages for asking the same questions. RENATA studied applied mathematics, holds a master’s degree from Harvard University, and followed mathematics into theoretical neuroscience during her PhD at Columbia University. Born and raised in Brazil, she developed a significant part of her career in classical music with the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, in parallel with her scientific training. As a soloist she has premiered works by young composers at the Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music. Her debut single, “True Randomness”, arrives September 25.
