Biography & Metadata

James Tseung is a Hong Kong-born composer and singer-songwriter based in Vancouver. His music blends soul, R&B, vintage pop, and jazz influences with emotive vocals, groove-driven songwriting, and deeply personal storytelling. His work often explores identity, cultural distance, solitude, memory, and the experience of living between places. In 2022, James released his second album, Vagabond, a conceptual work exploring loneliness, nostalgia, cultural distance, and the experience of living away from home during a period of profound personal and social change. His latest album, Empty Room, further explores these themes through the metaphor of a room and the experiences that unfold within it, reflecting on isolation, relationships, faith, nostalgia, and personal growth. The album develops a nostalgic and cinematic sound through intimate songwriting, vintage-inspired grooves, synth textures, and selective arrangements for horns and strings, while retaining a DIY sensibility. Working across songwriting, composition, and sound, James creates music for both personal expression and broader creative contexts, including film and art installations. Across his work, he continues to explore the relationship between place, memory, and sound, creating music that is emotionally intimate while stylistically eclectic.
