Jay-Jay Johanson

Swedish singer/songwriter Jäje Johanson, who goes by the stage name Jay-Jay Johanson, infuses the measured, slow-burn aesthetics of downbeat and trip-hop with the metallic pulse of electro-pop, resulting in his signature brand of film noir-imbued electronic melancholy. Born in Trollhättan, Sweden, Johanson debuted with Whiskey in 1996, followed by Tattoo (1998) and Poison (2000), the latter featuring Cocteau Twins' Robin Guthrie and debuting at number four on the French charts. His 2002 album Antenna, produced with German IDM duo Funkstörung, marked a shift toward a more electronic sound, while Rush (2005) featured French producer Jean-Pierre Ensuque. In 2006, he co-wrote and sang on The Knife's "Marble House," and in 2007, he released The Long Term Physical Effects Are Not Yet Known, followed by a global tour. Johanson has remained prolific, releasing a steady stream of albums including Spellbound (2011), Cockroach (2013), Opium (2015), Bury the Hatchet (2017), and Kings Cross (2019), the latter featuring the streaming hit "Heard Somebody Whistle," which appeared in HBO's Foodie Love and the film Eld & Lågor. In 2021, he released Rorschach Test, with the track "Vertigo" featured in Ralph Lauren's AW22 runway show.
