Flashback

Flashback is the synthwave project of Amsterdam-based artist and producer Maurits van Buren, crafting retro-futuristic tracks driven by cinematic atmosphere and infectious groove. Blending colorful analog synths with punchy, funk-infused basslines, his sound captures both the nostalgia and energy of the late ’80s and early ’90s. Starting his production journey in 2020, Flashback built his sound from the ground up. What began as a deep fascination with synth-driven music quickly evolved into a distinct artistic voice, leading to his official debut in 2023. Since then, Flashback has continued to refine a style that balances melodic storytelling with rhythmic momentum. Influenced by modern artists like Droid Bishop, ZAYAZ, Darkest, FM-84, Lyst, L'Avenue, morgan willis, The Last Concorde and Carpenter Brut, as well as pioneers such as Vangelis, John Carpenter, Tangerine Dream, and Miami Sound Machine, Flashback merges cinematic textures with a strong sense of groove—often anchored by bold, driving basslines that give his tracks their signature pulse. In 2025, his single Riva was featured on New Retro Wave, marking a key milestone and introducing his sound to a wider global audience. Defined by groove as much as atmosphere, Flashback’s sound brings together nostalgic, cinematic synths and a modern, rhythm-first approach.
