Hailing from the rural heartland of Ceza in Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal, Sibusiso Falakhe Khumalo—known professionally as uMlabalaba—has emerged as a powerful force in the Maskandi genre. Born as the third of five siblings in the Emahlabathini region of Ceza, his journey is defined by a fighting spirit born from the early loss of both parents. This resilience pushed him to complete his matriculation at Phikwase High School and eventually relocate to Johannesburg to build a lasting musical legacy for future generations. With a reputation as a technically-minded professional, uMlabalaba’s entry into the industry began in 2009 with a self-taught exploration of sound engineering. This technical foundation, combined with the strategic mindset suggested by his stage name—which refers to the complex traditional Zulu board game—has allowed him to master the production of a clean, melodic sound. His expertise as a composer, producer, guitarist, bass guitarist and keyboardist have placed him in a unique position in the Maskandi space.
