Fode Baro

Fodé Baro is a Guinean artist born into a noble family in Kankan, where music is traditionally reserved for griots. Passionate about music from a young age and inspired by Aboubacar Demba Camara, he defied his family’s expectations to pursue an artistic career. He left school and traveled to Sierra Leone and Liberia, where he learned music from a French Catholic priest and even led chants in church despite being Muslim. He returned to Guinea in 1985, collaborated with Bongui Makeba (daughter of Miriam Makeba), and later joined the group Les Messagers, working alongside major Mandingo artists. Seeking greater opportunities, he moved to Paris, where he connected with producer Ibrahima Sylla and released his breakthrough hit “Yirikiki,” gaining widespread success across Africa. Fodé Baro continued releasing popular albums and eventually based himself in Dakar, bridging Europe and Africa. In 2010, he released Libération combining danceable rhythms with politically engaged lyrics about Guinea’s challenges. Known for blending entertainment with meaningful messages, he earned the nickname “Fodé the Agitator.”
