Biography & Metadata
The Rundfunkchor Berlin is one of the world’s foremost choirs. Three Grammy Awards attest to the outstanding quality of its recordings. Its wide-ranging repertoire, flexible and richly nuanced sound, impeccable precision and compelling expressiveness make this professional choir a valued partner of leading orchestras and conductors, including Kirill Petrenko, Daniel Barenboim, Simon Rattle and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. In 2025, the choir celebrated its 100th anniversary and continued its series of transdisciplinary productions with Flying Mozart, projects that challenge the conventions of the classical concert format and attract international attention. These include the staged interpretation of Brahms’s Requiem as human requiem, which has toured around the world. The project LUTHER dancing with the gods, created with Robert Wilson, explored Luther’s influence on and within the arts in a genre-defying concert performance. The choir is committed to encouraging as many people as possible to sing through its large-scale sing-along concert and the Song Exchange for school choirs. Its education programme SING! promotes singing as part of everyday primary-school life. Through its Academy and Schola, as well as the International Masterclass for Choral Conducting Berlin, the ensemble supports the next generation of professional musicians. Gijs Leenaars has been the ensemble’s Chief Conductor since 2015, while Simon Halsey remains associated with the choir as its Honorary Conductor.
