Biography & Metadata

Man at Sea releases his much anticipated debut album 'Pale Fire Catch Me' on March 6th, 2026 . Rooted in indie alternative with hints of chamber pop, Man at Sea (aka Bristol based singer-songwriter David Hewson) draws influence from the dramatic lyricism of Rufus Wainwright and the brooding intensity of Nick Cave, while carving out a voice distinctly his own. Of the album Man at Sea says: “I have aways been most inspired by the great songwriters whether that’s Gershwin or Joni Mitchell or more contemporary writers like Neil Hannon and Thom Yorke. The ambition to somehow capture the human experience in song form is what drives me as a writer and I hope comes across in this, my debut record. The title 'Pale Fire Catch Me' is a reference to artistic inspiration (quoting Nabokov’s novel ‘Pale Fire’ itself lifted from Shakespeare) which feels under attack more than ever with the rise of AI art and the diminishing financial returns for making music in today’s landscape. I think most artists don’t really know where the desire to ‘imitate the pale fire of the moon’ comes from but certainly in my case it is the only thing that ‘quietly helps me through’ as I sing on track 7 ‘A To Z Of My Mistakes’. These songs aren’t about losing faith so much as learning how to live without it. They’re about what people reach for when certainty is gone but the need for meaning hasn’t disappeared.”
