Biography & Metadata
Alexey Shor is a contemporary classical composer whose music has been performed by many of the leading artists, orchestras, and ensembles of our time. Born in Ukraine in 1970, he later moved to the US, where he completed a PhD in mathematics and built a successful career in the field before turning towards composition. Shor’s compositions are known for their lyrical directness, tonal clarity, and expressiveness. Often described as melodic and accessible, his music draws on the traditions of classical and Romantic writing while speaking in a distinctly contemporary voice. His pieces have been performed in the world’s most prestigious venues, and have been interpreted by internationally renowned musicians such as (in alphabetical order) Behzod Abduraimov, Gautier Capuçon, Ray Chen, Narek Hakhnazaryan, Steven Isserlis, Evgeny Kissin, Daniel Lozakovich, Mikhail Pletnev, Gil Shaham, Maxim Vengerov, and many more. Shor’s music has appeared on labels including Warner Classics, Pentatone, Naxos, Berlin Classics, DECCA, DANON, SONY, and Farao Classics, while performances of his work have been broadcast on medici.tv, Mezzo, and Euronews. Shor has held several artistic roles, including Composer-in-Residence with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra since 2017, and the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra from 2024-2026. He also was Associate Composer at the Yehudi Menuhin School in 2022-2023, and was awarded an honorary professorship by the Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan in 2018.
