CHTHONIC

Taiwan is often seen as the spiritual homeland of Austronesian peoples and a modern society shaped by technology and human rights. Few artists embody these contrasts better than Taiwanese metal band Chthonic. Chthonic’s music draws from Taiwanese mythology, folklore, and history, blending folk music, enka, Taiwanese opera melodies, and traditional instruments with metal. The band has performed at major festivals including Ozzfest, Download, Wacken Open Air, Fuji Rock, and Summer Sonic, and toured across Europe, North America, and Asia. Collaborators include Randy Blythe, Marty Friedman, Hajime Chitose, and Denise Ho. Chthonic won two Golden Melody Awards, Taiwan's equivalent of the Grammys. Beyond music, bassist Doris curates festivals, drummer Dani works in music education, and guitarist Jesse and keyboardist CJ produce albums for Taiwanese artists. Frontman Freddy Lim became active in human rights movements, served in Taiwan’s parliament, and now represents Taiwan as Ambassador to Finland. Albums such as *Mirror of Retribution*, *Takasago Army*, and Bú-Tik gained international acclaim. Although less active after Freddy entered public service, Chthonic continued releasing music, including Battlefields of Asura (2018), “Pattonkan” (2023), and “Endless Aeons” (2025). In 2026, Chthonic collaborated with Finnish singer Mariska on the single “Näin Määrättiin.” Today, with members based between Helsinki and Taipei, Chthonic continues its musical journey.
