Piya Malik

Piya Malik and El Michels Affair’s first foray together into the world of psychedelic, Turkish-inspired, Bollywood Funk came in 2018 with the release of their debut 45 “Unathi” with B side “Zaharila”. 
 Bonded but their mutual love of collecting old Bollywood and Turkish Psychedelic records from Selda to Asha Puthli. They began creating a universe where stories of Yeti’s adventures and secret poisonous whispers, of smoke and mirrors and tragic unrequited love could be painted in melodies on snow white canvases like the mountains of the Himalayas where Piya spent many long childhood summers visiting her grandparents. 
 Soon thereafter it set the wheels in motion for El Michels Affair’s latest full length LP release ‘Yeti Season’ (March 2021) avail at Big Crown Records featuring picture sleeve artwork by the legendary Ghanian artist, Mr. Brew courtesy of Chicago’s Deadly Prey Gallery. 
 Born to an East African Indian father and a mother from the Indian Himalayas, and raised in London, Piya is the great niece of the celebrated 1950’s Bollywood music producer Jaidev - a humble man who composed prolifically for playback singers Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Raffi and Asha Bhosle and has provided a huge source of inspiration and influence to her music. She currently resides in Brooklyn.
