Accent

Accent is a storyteller, rapper and former street performer from the East Village of New York City. Early on in his career, when times were rough, Acc realized he could make money in the streets rapping for change and for a few years he worked as a busker on St. Marks Place and in Union Square Park. During this time he advanced his craft as a performer and freestyler, and learned to shed his artistic inhibitions and embrace his vulnerability as a man. With the voice of a born-rapper, Acc details his powerful lived experiences through his technically-advanced and poetic lyricism, which creates a truly unique sound. Accent’s latest releases stem from his sense of responsibility as a songwriter to make a statement in support of Black Lives Matter; a responsibility to acknowledge unfair systemic disadvantages, and to highlight how non-Whites aren't valued or regarded equally. His verse on “I Wanna Live” directly contributes to the “Know Their Names” movement in an attempt to help immortalize victims of police brutality. On “Boom Tick" he acknowledges that White privilege translates—even if to a lesser degree—to other non-Black minorities, as it does to him as a light-skinned Puerto Rican. And on the closing track, “Simulations (In Simulations)”, he chronicles his own unique experiences and regrets as the son of a political activist who was a part of the Socialist organization known as the Workers World Party.
