Biography & Metadata
Modenine, born Olusegun Babatunde, is widely regarded as one of the most respected lyricists in Nigerian hip-hop. Known for his complex wordplay, deep storytelling, and dedication to lyrical purity, he has been active in the rap scene since the late 1990s. Modenine was born in London, United Kingdom, to Nigerian parents but grew up mainly in Lagos, Nigeria. His early exposure to hip-hop culture shaped his passion for rap music, and he began writing rhymes while still in school. Influenced by classic hip-hop artists and the boom-bap era, he focused heavily on lyrical craftsmanship rather than commercial trends. He released his debut album E'Pluribus Unum in 2007, which helped establish him as a serious voice in Nigerian rap. Over the years he followed up with several albums including Pentium IX, Da Vinci Mode, Malcolm IX, and Above Ground Level. These projects reinforced his reputation as a lyric-focused MC and earned him the nickname “The Polymath” among fans. Throughout his career, Modenine has collaborated with numerous artists across Africa and internationally, contributing to the growth of hip-hop culture on the continent. He is also known for mentoring younger rappers and promoting the importance of lyrical skill, authenticity, and hip-hop knowledge. .
