Biography & Metadata
The Julies were—and somehow are again—an American alternative/indie guitar band mixing influences from ’80s post-punk and new wave with ’90s shoegaze, indie rock, and britpop to create music that was—in the case of 1996’s Lovelife at least—singularly magical. While Lovelife is largely regarded as their defining moment, they first made their mark with 1994’s 6-song, cassette-only release January. Drenched in evocative early-nineties guitar effects, this noisy, dreamy debut gained attention from NYC’s festival scene and major labels. Instead, they signed to the upstart Flying Tart and crafted Lovelife with help from Bill Campbell and David Barbe. Lovelife’s release was delayed as their label began to unravel. The Julies themselves disbanded shortly before the label folded, though Lovelife went on to sell thousands and attain cult-classic status. More than twenty years later, its vinyl reissue by Lost in Ohio inspired most of the band to reunite. What began as a passion project soon evolved into record-making, leading to the release of Always & Always—the band's acclaimed first-ever full-length album. Now, The Julies continue this vibrant new chapter with their upcoming album, Cherisher. Mixed and mastered in London by James Aparicio (Depeche Mode, Spiritualized), Cherisher leans fully into memory and meaning, delivering a deeply personal collection, and proving that The Julies' story remains beautifully unfinished.
