Hendrik Lasure

Hendrik Lasure (28) has grown into one of the most striking names on the Belgian jazz scene in recent years. As a keyboardist, he made his mark with ensembles such as schntzl, Bombataz, An Pierlé Quartet and Thunderblender, and he is also active as a theatre-maker and film score composer. In late 2022, Lasure surprised friend and foe alike with Het Wiel, his debut album under his own name. For the first time, he sang in Dutch — and not just any Dutch, but his own spoken language, unpolished and direct. The album received glowing reviews in the Flemish press, which praised in particular his disarming way of handling language. On Het Wiel, the words were central, the seed from which all the music grew. "I arrived at this way of singing by recording myself while writing the songs," Lasure explained. "When I stayed very close to my own way of speaking while singing, it moved me much more, because I'm not used to such direct communication in a song. Suddenly I heard myself for real — beautiful and ugly at once, but very human and true."
