Mary Sue’s earliest EPs in 2020/21, we heard the metamorphosis of an unknown name into an emboldened artist and the progenitor of one of the premier creative cliques in the world: Clementi Sound . Centred in his home country of Singapore, Sue’s influences and influence has expanded across Asia, into the UK alongside the ‘Splayed’ scene, and across a couple of bodies of water to the US. In 2022, Sue released his debut album, KISSES OF LIFE: a work of blood, smiles, and tears. Blending immaculate sampling, glitching soundscapes, and vulnerable lyricism, Sue delivered a potently poignant project, earning a spot in Bandcamp’s best hip-hop records of the year. Jumping from one Bandcamp best of the year to another, 2024 saw the release of Voice Memos From A Winter In China following a winter tour in China with the Clementi Sound Appreciation Club. A Winter In China is a warm cup of tea in the frigid twilight, or a familial hug to fend off homesickness. Intimate, expansive, and transportive, Sue pushes the envelope, mailing back an idylic sonic postcard to all with open ears. 2025 will see the release of Mary Sue and the Clementi Sound Appreciation Club’s newest opus, Porcelain Shield, Paper Sword: a grand piece, ripe with live instrumentation, yet close and cutting with Sue’s sharp delivery and lyrics.
