Bhekumuzi Luthuli

Bhekumuzi Luthuli is one of South Africa's longest-standing Maskandi stars. From the start, he stood out with a slick, sophisticated look, perming his hair and dressing in the finest clothes. Growing up in KwaZulu Natal, Bhekumuzi's passion for music began with a tin guitar. In the early '80s, he joined the Mbaqanga group Oshimi in Durban, recording two albums before going solo. Meeting renowned Maskandi producer Tom Mkhize was a turning point, converting Bhekumuzi to Maskandi and elevating him to superstar status. Known for his storytelling, he explains, “My music is about what I see in society. I try to put comic elements in my songs so people will enjoy them. I like my music to be educational and entertaining.” His first solo album in '92, "Uzodela Inkani," garnered major label interest. His second album, "Wongikhonzela Enhliziyweni," earned OKTV and SAMA Awards. Partnering with Gallo Record Company, Bhekumuzi has released over 20 best-selling albums, achieving gold, platinum, and multi-platinum status. His music appeals to both rural and city dwellers, reaching international audiences as well.
