Substance Abuse

Subz and Eso Tre are L.A. duo Substance Abuse. Raised in the ways of old school hip hop, the dynamic duo met in 5th grade. Listening to groups like Run DMC and Public Enemy in their formative years, the two saw hip hop evolve and the emergence and evolution of "battle rhyming" pioneered by groups like Freestyle Fellowship and Souls of Mischief. Though skating and graffiti were the hallmarks of West Los Angeles in the early to mid 1990s, the two found solace cultivating their freestyle skills in the hills of the Santa Monica Canyon. Their big break came in 2001 when they were signed by Ground Control records, the home of fan favourites such as Aceyalone, Zion I, Rasco, and Planet Asia. Though the record industry began to decline in the early 2000s in the wake of the digital era, Substance Abuse was determined to put out a classic debut album at all costs. With releases on Ground Control and Eric Steuer's Weapon Shaped, Substance Abuse eventually linked with the legendary Kutmasta Kurt and dropped their debut album "Overproof" on Threshold Recordings. Featuring Kool Keith, MF Doom, Thes One, Rasco, and more, the album received four stars in both URB and Scratch. A few years later Substance Abuse dropped their debut LP 'Background Music' featuring Tash, Sadat X, MC Eiht, Percee P, Max Julien, Myka Nyne, and KRS-One. Their song "Rear View" featuring KRS-One made it on to DJ Premier's classic show "Live from Headquarters." Coming soon - 'Don't Add Me' on Ramrock Red Records.
