Biography & Metadata
Ramón Ortega Quero is an oboist who focuses on 18th and 19th century repertoire. Among the many ensembles he has worked with is the wind quintet variation5, with whom he recorded an album in 2017, and he is principal oboist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. His discography opens with his 2010 debut album Shadows, which won the ECHO Klassik "Newcomer of the Year" award. Three other major recordings followed: a 2011 album of J.S. Bach, Telemann, and C.P.E. Bach oboe concertos with the Kammerakademie Potsdam; The Romantic Oboist (2012), featuring works by Schumann, Schubert, and Tchaikovsky; and Bach's Concerto for Violin and Oboe, BWV 1060 (2013). In 2026, he partnered with fellow oboist Ángel Luis Sánchez Moreno to create Zelenka: The Six Suites (2026). Born in Granada, Spain, Ortega Quero joined the Andalusian Youth Orchestra at age 12, and his career took major steps in his teenage years: at 15, he was invited to join Daniel Barenboim's West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, and in 2007, he won First Prize at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich. At 20 years old, he took up his position with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra as principal oboist. Ortega Quero's 2015 included his debut recital at Carnegie Hall and the world premiere of Óscar Navarro's oboe concerto Legacy, with the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie. Shortly after, he toured Asia with the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. His first foray into conducting came in 2018, with a residency at the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada. In the 2020s, Ortega Quero continued an active concert schedule as a soloist that took him across Europe, with engagements in Japan and China, and he has performed regularly with a wind ensemble that consists of Bavarian Radio Symphony members. ~ Jane Harrison, Rovi
