Nat Reeves

Nat Reeves is one of the premier bassists in jazz, with a career spanning more than four decades as both a performer and educator. Known for his deeply supportive time, rich tone, and ability to elevate any ensemble, he has been a central presence on countless recordings and tours, most notably with legendary alto saxophonists Jackie McLean and Kenny Garrett. As a leader, he has released the albums State of Emergency and Blue Ridge, showcasing his compositional voice and command of the instrument. Born and raised in Lynchburg, Virginia, Reeves was introduced to music through his family and began playing electric bass as a teenager, learning by ear from soul, rock, and radio hits before discovering jazz. After moving to New York City in 1979, Reeves immersed himself in the jazz scene and toured with Sonny Stitt on the saxophonist’s final tour in 1982. He soon began a long association with Jackie McLean, performing with him for nearly two decades while absorbing lessons that would shape both his playing and his later work as a teacher. Reeves’ extensive résumé includes performances and recordings with Benny Golson, Donald Byrd, Pharoah Sanders, George Coleman, Eric Alexander, Steve Davis, Harold Mabern, George Cables, Joe Farnsworth, and many others. Now based in Hartford, Connecticut, Nat Reeves remains an active performer, bandleader, and mentor, dedicated to carrying forward the jazz tradition while continuing to develop his own projects.
