Biography & Metadata
Kingston born Spragga Benz rose to prominence in the early ‘90s with a flurry of underground hits that would help define the Dancehall genre. His Jamaican success led to a major label deal with Capitol Records and diverse crossover collaborations, including game-changing pairings with ground breaking rap stalwarts KRS-One, Wylcef Jean, Foxy Brown, and more. His appearance in the cult-classic Jamaican gangster film Shottas further elevated his reputation as an iconic presence who mindfully represented the entire Reggae culture, continuing to draw acclaim via a series of influential albums and milestone collaborations with Carly Simon, Lil Bow Wow, Kevin Lyttle, Pras, Stephen Marley, Damian Marley, and others. Universally recognized as an in-demand live performer at festivals and tours throughout his career, his 25 year impact on the Dancehall scene is ardently reflected in his sixth album, Chiliagon, (Sept 2019 - Buttercuts/Easy Star/Red Square Productions), featuring top UK vocalists/producers influenced by Spragga’s sprawling legacy, encompassing drum and bass, dubstep, garage, grime, jungle and British hip hop. The first album from one of Jamaica’s most conscious voices in nearly a decade, it arrives as another seminal work from Spragga who continues to extend the boundaries of the Dancehall movement.
