Steven James

Steven James is a Florida-based artist with one foot in forward-looking alternative Pop / R&B, and the other in country’s soul-baring tradition, using both to walk toward a form of personal and spiritual liberation. Self-emancipated at age 15, addiction, homelessness and the loss of a brother combined to unlock his catchy-yet-confessional song craft, pulling on inspirational threads as diverse as Hank Williams and Amy Winehouse, George Strait and Randy Travis. Evocatively edgy and blessed with a compelling, compassionate voice, James’ viral emergence in 2023 has led to a wave of what might best be described as “Pop country” – plaintive vocals and acoustic guitars, fused with crisp beats, falsetto hooks and bass-heavy atmosphere.
