Biography & Metadata

Jonathan Crossley is a guitarist, improviser and composer whose work explores the space between electric guitar, electronic sound and collaborative improvisation. Born in Belfast and shaped musically in South Africa, his music draws together experimental jazz, ambient and electro-acoustic sound, progressive rock and African-inflected rhythmic approaches. Technology has been central to Crossley’s practice for more than two decades. His extended guitar system combines conventional and prepared guitar with synthesis, sampling, live processing and generative electronics, creating new possibilities for interaction between improvising musicians. Recent work has centred on international collaboration, including recordings and performances with Carlo Mombelli, Jonno Sweetman, David Kollar, Lukas Ligeti, Arve Henriksen, Keenan Ahrends and others. In 2026 Crossley joined 7D Media for two new releases. Solace, with Kollar and Ligeti and featuring Henriksen, explores atmospheric, technologically mediated improvisation. St Augustine’s Remorse, with Mombelli and Sweetman, takes a more contemplative direction. Across these projects, the connecting thread is improvisation as interaction: musicians listening, responding and reshaping the music together, with technology becoming part of that encounter.
