Biography & Metadata

tokyo tapes is a Bosnian born, Sweden based artist who is spiritually residing in Japan. He emerged as a collection of memories and experiences during Tarik's first trip to Japan. As Vindu was his experience of Japan before visiting, tokyo tapes is an extraordinary experience after the visit. Japan changed his perception of life, food and music. He discovered new ways of making music and has heavily been influenced by 90s and early 00's Japanese ambient scene, especially the environmental ambient music works from Hiroshi Yoshimura, Yoshio Ojima, Haruomi Hosono, Yoshio Chin Suzuki and Yasuaki Shimizu. It opened the whole new horizon for musical expression and craft that made Tarik connect even further with human aspect of music, not precise but full of little happy accidents, out of scale notes and off rhythm beats. tokyo tapes sound comes from external gear and virtual synthesizers. As music was made from 80s to 00's ambient scene with a lot of hardware instruments, his sound tends to be made mostly the same way, with external synths and effect pedals. Unfortunately, with the prices skyrocketing for analog and older music gear, some of them became unobtainable and that is the reason for digital usage of instruments and DAWs. tokyo tapes believes every moment and his surroundings have a melody and a song to tell, which you can hear in his musical pieces, often described or hidden behind the song titles and videos/photos in the background.
