Biography & Metadata
Growing up in Rochester, NY, Spencer. excelled at trumpet and piano from a young age, with early roots in the Eastman music community. Working out of a Bed-Stuy apartment in Brooklyn, he gained traction with a string of independent anthems — including the BBC-supported "Want U Back" — before signing to 4AD and releasing his debut full-length Are U Down? in 2021. A dynamic vocalist, precise multi-instrumentalist, acute producer, and unpredictable presence, Spencer. sings, creates beats, and plays everything from piano, guitar, bass, drums, and trumpet himself. Drawing from neo-soul, hip-hop, indie rock, and jazz, his music resists easy categorization — intimate and expansive, lo-fi and lush, introspective and immediate. NME praised Are U Down? for its "sharp production skills," while DIY declared his skills as a producer and songwriter had "never been more evident." A co-writer on Cautious Clay's "Ohio" — featured on the Blue Note album KARPEH — Spencer. has also made his mark beyond his own catalog. Now based back in Rochester, Spencer. has spent time recording in New Orleans, yielding the nolademos EP (2023) and his 2025 album This Is What Faith Is — his most assured and uncompromising statement yet.
