Biography & Metadata
Listen closely. There’s something to find. Gumshen songs behave. Until they don’t. Melodies that stick pull you in. Then something shifts. A steady beat stops. A song drops toward silence, then snaps back. Synths give way to guitars. Bright music carries darker words. Sometimes the turn is lyrical: a question becomes a command, or a familiar phrase turns itself inside out. We call those moments twists. Gumshen is a Seattle duo—Jan Ciganik and Ron Hippe—making music together since 2006. Before Gumshen, Jan recorded with Ventilator and worked with John Cale and drummer Greg Gilmore. The band began with fast guitars and hard drums, then gradually pulled synths and electronic rhythms into the picture. You don’t need to know what changed. You just notice the song went somewhere you didn’t expect. Those shifts, breaks, and contrasts keep showing up. Sometimes they’re obvious. Sometimes you catch one after the hook has already stuck. Hear one? Tell us what you caught. DM us on Instagram with the Gumshen song + the twist you found, and we’ll send you a free Gumshen CD. The next twist is yours to find.
