Biography & Metadata

Mediaeval Baebes celebrate their 30th anniversary this year — and a MydWynter tour awaits… The genre-defying, classical chart-topping vocal ensemble was conceived and formed in 1996 by musical director and composer Katharine Blake. For their very first performance, the band broke into Abney Park Cemetery, singing in white robes beneath the moonlight. The group has released twelve studio albums and received an Ivor Novello Award for their work on the BBC serialisation The Virgin Queen. They also earned two Emmy nominations and a Royal Television Society Award as featured artists alongside composer Martin Phipps for the theme tune to ITV’s acclaimed drama Victoria. Across their many incarnations, the Mediaeval Baebes’ haunting vocals have carried them around the world, touring throughout the UK, the United States, Canada, Asia, and Europe. Their performances have spanned castles, caves, cathedrals, and even the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival. They have toured with Jools Holland and performed at venues including Royal Albert Hall, Carnglaze Caverns, and Jersey Opera House. The group also supported Michael Flatley in Hyde Park, appeared at the legendary Lilith Fair, and proudly count Iggy Pop among their most devoted admirers. Their latest studio album, The Spinning Wheel, is a richly woven collection of twelve songs inspired by the turning of the year and the passing months. Thirty years on, the wheel still turns…
