Biography & Metadata

Rooted in hip-hop but open to all genres, Shmu transforms emotions and experiences into music that connects people. For him, music is a space of learning, inspiration and expression beyond words. He believes in making a difference in his reality. Open to collaborations, Shmu explores sound as a force of connection and transformation. ⸻ In February 2025, Winterthur-based Shmu traveled to Kilifi, Kenya, where he collaborated with rapper Ziller Bas on “Mekatilili”. Released in August 2025, the independently produced album entered the Swiss Album Charts at number 11. “Mekatilili” tells the story of Mekatilili wa Menza, a leader of the Mijikenda-Giriama community who rose up against British colonial rule in the early 20th century. Blending rap with historical storytelling, the album brings her legacy into the present. Over Christmas and New Year 2025/26, Shmu returned to Kilifi to perform at Beneath the Baobabs, one of East Africa’s major music festivals. During his stay, Shmu and Ziller Bas created their second album, “Safari ya Bamba”, set for release on October 9, 2026. Where “Mekatilili” looked back at history, “Safari ya Bamba” turns toward the journey itself. Across seven songs, it explores movement and transition: what we leave behind, what we carry with us, the encounters that shape us, and what remains when we move on. 10% of every “Safari ya Bamba” vinyl sale is donated to the Winterthur Women’s Shelter, supporting women and children affected by domestic violence.
