Biography & Metadata

Berlin-based, Danish-born singer, songwriter, producer and classically trained pianist Agnes Obel creates atmospheric music that moves between alternative, neo-classical, pop, jazz and electronic worlds. Since the release of her platinum-selling debut Philharmonics, followed by Aventine, Citizen of Glass and Myopia, Obel has established a singular musical language shaped by intimate piano, distinctive production, electronics and her elegant, melancholic voice. Her albums are written, recorded and produced by Obel herself, and her music has found its way into film, television and gaming, including The Last of Us, True Detective, Big Little Lies and Dark Souls III. After a five-year break from the foreground, Obel returned to the stage in 2025, including a performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall, followed by further touring throughout 2026. Her fifth studio album, The Meaning of Flowers, arrives on September 18, 2026. Woven from different strands of thought and inspiration, the album draws on sources ranging from the ancient poetry of Enheduanna and the ideas of Hannah Arendt and Emanuele Coccia to the Danish pop scene of the ’80s and ’90s. The album also reflects the emotional and creative impact of motherhood, which took Obel’s thought and compositional processes in new directions. The Meaning of Flowers is dedicated to her daughter: “she who has changed me and raised me and taught me so much – and I can feel so much more awaits to be learned.”
