Biography & Metadata
Secret Songbook began with things I wrote down for myself. I’ve been journaling for over 20 years. Sometimes I pick up an old journal and read about how I was feeling back then. I find things I’d forgotten, worries that once kept me awake, or little moments I didn’t know I’d want to remember. Sometimes a page brings back enough that I start writing a song. Some of my songs began as poems. Others grew from the novels I’m writing, childhood memories, or missing someone I can’t sit down and talk to. Even a silly argument can inspire a lyric. Once I’ve had time to laugh about it, there’s usually something worth writing down. Places find their way into the music too: somewhere I’ve lived, a trip I still think about, or a place I hope to visit. Bangla is at the heart of Secret Songbook. The mood depends on the memory. Some songs are tender or lonely; others are playful because that’s how I remember the people in them. For years, most of these words stayed in my journals. Sharing them as music feels personal, and a little strange. Someone can hear a song without knowing the story behind it and think of a completely different person from their own life. I like that. I’d love for these songs to become part of someone else’s memories too.
