Biography & Metadata

Hi, I'm Nigel and welcome to The Low Countries - a musical home to fine quality songs made with some dear musical friends. Creating music has always been my way of processing life's struggles, dealing with inner emotions and meeting nice people. For most of my life really. During Britpop I played and wrote power-pop as The High Ones. From 2007 I calmed down a bit and became a singer-songwriter known as 'The Low Countries' along with Els D'hooge on vocals/accordion. My default genre is indie-folk but I still dabble in indie-pop, jazz, rock - wherever the song leads... The last few years I've been collaborating with artists all over the Earth, and hope to carry this on into the future. In 2023 my 2nd volume of the acclaimed 'Betty's Boudoir Sessions' was released and the song 'I'm Away Now' was picked up by BBC6 Music and included on their end of year Mixtape, plus numerous plays on BBC Introducing "A gorgeous elegy to Scott Hutchison" Tom Robinson This year I'm releasing a virtual double-A side - recorded with the band - of a summery shimmering catchy as hell pop tune (a budget Penny Lane) and a reflective acoustic classic about grief and hope. "Indie-folk at its best" Folk Radio UK "They make literate, clever music that makes Belle and Sebastian look like a bunch of thugs" Popshifter "They're witty, they're psychedelic, they're individual, they're self-depreciating at times, and they write some very good songs ...a lost treasure" The Sound of Confusion
